The Google Business Profile Checklist for Local Businesses

Your Google Business Profile is often the first thing a customer sees, before your website. This checklist covers what to set up once and what to keep doing.

Set up once

Business name exactly as it appears on your sign and paperwork. Do not add keywords.
Primary category that best describes what you do, plus relevant secondary categories.
Address, or service areas if you travel to customers.
A local phone number that someone answers.
Opening hours, including holiday hours.
Website link and an appointment or quote link.
Services, each with a short description.
A business description written for customers, not for search engines.

Add proof

At least ten real photos: your team, your vehicles, your work, your premises.
A logo and a cover photo.
Attributes that apply, such as languages spoken or emergency service.

Do every week

Reply to every new review, good or bad.
Add a post: a finished job, an offer, a tip or a seasonal reminder.
Upload a few new photos.
Check the questions section and answer anything new.

Do every month

Confirm your hours and services are still correct.
Look at the performance numbers: calls, direction requests and website clicks.
Search for your own business and check for duplicate or incorrect listings.

Common mistakes

Stuffing the business name with keywords, using a call-centre number, leaving the profile untouched for months and ignoring reviews are the four we see most. Each one costs rankings or trust. A complete, active profile beats a neglected one almost every time.
